This year’s DUPC brought the energy, the passion, and the dedication every step of the way. If you missed it, check out our “Meet the Team” video and get to know the dancers who have made this season so special.

Convention Classes

At Dance Unlimited, we intentionally choose competitions that also offer convention classes, because they are so important for the growth of young dancers. These classes give them the chance to train with diverse, top-tier instructors, explore new styles, and challenge themselves in unfamiliar settings. It can be nerve wracking to leave the “safety net” of our studio and take class in front of hundreds of strangers! Convention weekends are where creativity expands, resilience is built, and dancers learn to move in new ways.

Competition Highlights

We just finished up our competitive dance season. Our dancers have competed at 6 Regional Competitions! We are so proud of their wins on stage, but more importantly the growth they’ve shown across the entire season. Click on the competitions below to view award highlights and photos from each weekend!

  This event was a major highlight! All of our dancers were able to participate in the weekend REVUE showcase with their full team routine “I Am Here”, and they were all chosen to perform with the City Crew, which is a routine they learned over the course of the weekend.

On today’s blog, we’re spreading the word about four special initiatives that we hold close to our hearts. Join us as we share how these unique programs not only elevate the art of dance but also foster connection within the Augusta community. 

Our unique class offerings: 

1. Darby’s Dancers

Every Saturday at the studio, we offer an Adaptive Dance Class for students with disabilities. As part of a nationally recognized non-profit organization, Darby’s Dancers promotes creativity, confidence, and a sense of belonging for everyone. Learn more about the organization’s mission here!

If your child needs an adaptive environment but loves to dance, Darby’s Dancers is a great way to express themselves and break out of their shell! Your child will learn a variety of dance styles throughout the year. Our dedicated staff will ensure that each student is encouraged and included. At DU, dance is for everybody!

This class is offered on Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. from September to June. Dancers are welcome to register at any time throughout the dance year. To learn more and register your child, click here! 

2. Kennebec Music Together

Dance and music go hand in hand, PLUS studies have shown that early childhood music classes greatly support cognitive development in infants. That’s why we’ve brought Kennebec Music Together classes to DU on Tuesdays at 11:15 am.

In this interactive music class, children ages 5 and under are accompanied by their caregiver for singalongs, rhythmic rhymes, movement, and instrument play. We love hosting this class as it gives children a strong foundation for development while also introducing them to rhythm and creativity. Click here to learn more and register your child! 

3. Adult Pilates

Who says the kids get to have all the fun? Our brand new Adult Pilates Class is a great way to sculpt and strengthen your body. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or new to Pilates, our experienced instructors will guide you through invigorating sessions tailored to all skill levels. Pencil in some me-time with us on Tuesdays from 10-11 am. Click here to register!

4. BallroomKids

In addition to our normal line up of technique classes, we now offer an introductory Ballroom class for ages 7-12. Join us every Wednesday at 4pm! Ballroom can open the door to new dance styles, making your child a more well-rounded mover. This class will give them a strong foundation of various ballroom techniques! Click here to register!

At Dance Unlimited, we’re passionate about making creativity and inclusivity a part of every dancer’s journey. Our exciting programs are designed with everyone in mind, and we can’t wait for you to jump in! So what is Acro? 

In an Acro Dance Class, students learn how to combine their dance technique with acrobatic elements, as these disciplines greatly complement each other. Our Acro Programs teach students how to use their flexibility, strength, and athleticism to execute impressive skills safely.

What makes DU’s Acro Programs unique? 

Here at DU, all of our Acro instructors are certified by Acrobatic Arts, a worldwide training program and network for dance educators. The Acrobatic Arts training program gives our skilled dance instructors further knowledge of anatomy, skill progressions, and best safety practices for their classes. Their courses provide hands-on training in spotting and step-by-step skill development. Acrobatic Arts has set the standard for excellence in Acro Training and we are so proud to have our instructors certified! 

How does DU put safety first? 

In addition to getting all of our instructors certified with Acrobatic Arts, DU uses the following best practices to ensure that our Acro Students stay safe while training:

• • A comprehensive warm up in every class. Complete with gross motor skills, stretching, and conditioning exercises, each warm up lowers the likelihood of injuries due to stiff and under-engaged muscles/joints. 
  • A clear progression of skills. Our students move through skills in order of difficulty. Each student must master each skill in order before moving on to the harder progression. This ensures that no one is attempting anything if their body hasn’t mastered the necessary building blocks!
  • Supportive equipment. We use mats and assistive equipment to help train a child’s movement and prevent injuries. Our students don’t learn skills on studio floors.   
  • Spotting techniques. Our instructors are trained to assist a child through a skill, as well as catch/hold a child if they don’t execute it properly. They are in GREAT hands! 

As you can see, safety isn’t just a priority for us at DU, it’s a practice. Safety is woven into everything we do here and we know that trusting us with your child is a great responsibility. We take our students’ safety very seriously and we hope you’ll choose us as your child’s home for Acro Training!

Our DUPC dancers attend multiple competitions and conventions throughout the year. They train in Jazz, Tap, Hip Hop, Modern, Acro, and Ballet and those of age and ability also train in Pointe. The DUPC is for dancers who want more time on stage and are ready to take their dance training to the next level in a team environment.

In addition to getting extra performance opportunities throughout the dance year, our DUPC dancers participate in community events, volunteer, and fundraise. They are role models within our studio community!

Our Elite Team is our most advanced team and is made up of students ages 10-18. The elite-level dancers are striving for added excellence in their dance training. What would you do with a billion dollars? I would buy the most fashionable clothes, a Gucci bag, Versace perfume, and buy myself a car.

Besides dance, what are you really good at? I’m really good at doing makeup, basketball, swimming, doing math, baking, training dogs, and being an actress and fashion star.

What is one of your goals for the future? My goal is to dance really hard so I can travel. I’m really hoping to dance in Europe, Hawaii, Paris, and New York.

Our Mini Company is made up of dancers ages 6-9, making them our youngest group of performers. These dancers were selected by invitation only and are required to take weekly technique classes in Ballet, Tap, and Jazz. Hip Hop and Acro classes are optional but encouraged. The Mini Company is a great introduction to what it’s like to be a part of the DUPC!

Our Mini DUPC has had an amazing season so far! Last month, our Mini Team had their first performance for the Maine Bulldogs at the Kennebec Valley YMCA. They performed a holiday dance at halftime and we were so proud of their bravery. Take a look at an adorable moment from the performance!

We’ve got some upcoming performances and events on the calendar that are sure to get you in the holiday spirit! We can’t wait to tell you about them! Check out what’s happening below and be sure to add these events to your calendar! 

Augusta Holiday Tree Lighting Performance

On Saturday, November 25th, join us for one of Augusta’s most treasured holiday traditions! The City of Augusta will be kicking off the holiday season with fun activities all day long, closing out with the tree lighting and fireworks. Each year, our DUPC dancers and select classes perform at the tree lighting alongside the Central Maine Twirling Corps. The performance will happen at approximately 4pm in front of the Old Federal Building on Water Street. For a complete list of the entire day’s events, click here! 

Holiday Performance at the Inn at City Hall

Directly prior to the Tree Lighting, our dancers will also be performing at the assisted living facility across the street from Old Fort Western. While this performance is not open to the public, we are excited for our dancers to experience the magic of giving and sharing their love of dance with the residents at the Inn. You’re Invited to a Nutcracker Tea Party on Saturday, December 9th.

Again, this is one of our favorite traditions for creating holiday magic in our community! Each year, we host a marvelous event that gives our youngest guests a chance to journey into the land of sweets. The event will consist of a Nutcracker-inspired ballet class, crafts, and a tea party. DUPC Performance at the Maine Bulldogs Game

After heading to our Nutcracker Tea Party on Saturday, December 9th, come join us for a performance at the Maine Bulldogs vs. 518 Ballers. The game starts at 4pm at the Kennebec Valley YMCA. Our DUPC Mini Team will be performing at halftime and they’d love to have some supporters cheering them on in the audience! Purchase tickets here!

When you sign your child up for an activity, you always want them to have them to have the best possible experience. As a parent, it can be stressful making sure your child has everything they need. But here at DU, we want our dance parents to feel a sense of ease. We’ve got you! 

So below, you’ll find a few lists of tips, tricks, and reminders for an awesome year. We hope they are helpful!  

Tips for Making the Most out of Your Child’s Class Time:

• Have your child’s shoes ready to go and tuck in their ballet shoe drawstrings. Having to stop and tie those little guys can be a huge distraction during class! Not to mention a safety hazard if they are too long!
• Take your child to the restroom before class. Our classes are jam packed with rich material and every minute counts! Avoid missing out for potty breaks. 
• Give your child a snack before class and bring a water bottle. Our afternoon/evening classes are often near dinner time, so naturally your child’s tummy may be close to empty. Learning is hard when you’re not fueled properly! 
• Tie your child’s hair up tightly. If their hair is in their face, they are often distracted by playing with it.  If their hair is falling out or down, it also becomes a safety issue when they are dancing.  
• Make sure your child is in dress code. By being in the proper attire, you’re ensuring that your child’s instructor can see their body correctly. In addition, it helps build a sense of pride, confidence, and community in class! Click here to view our dress code requirements.
• Encourage your child to practice and review at home. The more our class content and routines are reinforced at home, the more valuable their class time becomes. They’ll be able to really sink in all the notes and corrections their teachers give them because they won’t be worried about what step comes next! 

Tips for a great year, beyond just in class: 

• Stock up on extra dancewear. Tights inevitably will snag throughout the year and it’s always nice to have a few leotards to wear when one gets dirty. Lucky for our dance parents, we make it really easy to buy the correct dancewear that follows our dress code. • Follow us on social media and check your email often to stay in the loop. Click here to follow us on Facebook and click here to access our instagram profile. You might even see your child make an appearance! But all important information is always sent via email, so don’t forget to keep an eye on your inbox as well. 
• Put all important dates in your calendar. You can reference your Calendar magnet you received at the first day of class or View our event calendar here and pencil it all in so nothing sneaks up on you!    
• Get to know the other parents. Our dance family is supportive and welcoming. We’re so glad to have you! 
• Let your child know you are their biggest fan. Being your child’s support system is the most important thing you can do for your child as a dance parent. Celebrate their successes and give them pep talks when they face challenges. Avoid comparisons or pressure to be “perfect” in class. With your love and support, your child’s confidence will soar! 

We can’t wait to watch all of our students flourish in class and on stage. We hope that dancing with us is the best decision you make for your child this year! On top of that, we hope that it’s easy, stress free, and meaningful for you too!

Bring-a-Friend Week

The studio will be full of energy as our dancers invite their friends into our studio home and show them what Dance Unlimited is all about! 

During this special week, our talented teachers will be giving our guests a peek into what normal dance classes are like at the studio. They’ll be slightly adjusting their lesson plans to make sure that ALL our guests feel welcome and inspired! Parents can expect lots of learning, laughter, and camaraderie. 

Guests do not need previous dance experience or dance attire. All levels are welcome! We also don’t want our guests to worry about dance attire or proper dance shoes. Athletic clothing that allows movement and a pair of socks (or clean gym shoes for hip hop) will work great! 

Ready to have a fantastic week?

Follow the steps below to get started! 

1. If you are a current student, start thinking about who you’d like to invite to join you in class! 
2. Have your friend (or their parents!) RSVP. You can also forward them any of the Bring-a-Friend emails, social posts, OR this blog article! 
3. Check-in with your friend a day or two before class. Let them know you’ll meet them in the lobby, show them where to keep their belongings, and walk them to class. 
4. Get excited! We can’t wait to welcome your friends to Dance Unlimited!

If you are a potential new family and do not have an invite from a current DU dancer, you are welcome to join in the fun too! All we ask is that you RSVP so our team can plan accordingly. The more the merrier!
